SALES MANAGER Reports to: Executive Director Department: Executive Office Status: Exempt CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK: This is administrative work with responsibilities for coordinating, developing, and executing sales functions for all segments of the market. Plans, coordinates, and develops sales strategies to recruit new business for the BJCC complex, to include: conventions, trade shows, consumer shows. Creates bid proposals for prospective events. Negotiates license agreements and financial terms in accordance with internal and legal policies and guidelines. Works with BJCC business partners (Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sheraton and Westin Birmingham Hotels) to attract national and regional conventions, corporate and association meetings and sporting events. Expected to travel to make sales calls, as necessary. Work is subject to review through collaboration, conferences and reports to the ED, to whom the employee reports. Technical Expertise and Knowledge • Demonstrates an understanding of the full range of principles, terms, techniques, and procedures to formulate, coordinate, and execute sales and marketing activities to promote sales growth. • Demonstrates a full performance ability to make independent decisions to initiate, plan and coordinate multiple sales and marketing plans, ranging from routine to more complex, that attract traditional and non-traditional events. • Demonstrates an ability to use sales forecasting or strategic planning to ensure the sale and profitability of products, lines, or services, analyzing business developments and monitoring market trends. • Demonstrates an ability to develop pricing strategies, create bid proposals, and establish space assignment for prospective bookings. • Demonstrates a full performance ability to negotiate license agreements and financial terms in accordance with policies and pricing guidelines. • Demonstrates an ability to meet deadlines, define, measure and evaluate sales and marketing plan results. Prioritizes and sets deadlines for one’s own work. • Demonstrates an advanced proficiency to use a range of current and modern job-related equipment, computer hardware, software applications, social media, and best practices. Communication and Customer Service • Demonstrates an ability to develop and execute persuasive written and verbal communications, regarding promotional activity, sales pitches, document sales, and various report generation. • Demonstrates an ability to persuasively and effectively communicate in writing, in person, by telephone or by email and/or social media outlets, with external and internal customers, representing the BJCC to customers, the public, government and other external sources. • Demonstrates an ability to effectively listen, speak, and interact in a tactful and persuasive manner in both a work and public setting. • Demonstrates an ability to thinking creatively, develop, design, or create new sales and marketing applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including artistic contribution. • Demonstrates an advanced ability to establish and maintain relationships constructively and cooperatively BJCC partners (CVB, Sheraton/Westin, Event Departments, etc.), meeting planners, promoters, exhibitors, patrons and staff. • Demonstrates the ability to analyze and evaluate information and results to choose the best solution and solve problems. Makes independent decisions and address issues, complaints, and needs, as a part of the group decision making process. • Demonstrates a commitment to customer and quality service by communicating customer service philosophies and standards and orienting others in effective customer service strategies. Encourages others to continually improve the customer sales and service experience. REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in marketing, mass communications, businesses or related fields. Minimum of five (5) years related experience coordinating and executing sales and marketing strategies in a convention, entertainment, performing arts or hospitality organization. Professional industry related certification such as CSP (Certified Sales Professional) or CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) highly preferred. Ability to build effective relationships, both internally and externally, by representing BJCC in a professional manner in all endeavors. Ability to travel throughout the United States to make sales calls or attend industry/association meetings. Ability to works extended and/or irregular hours including day, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Ability to achieve sales and marketing results, and communicate effectively. Ability to prospect, negotiate sales contracts and bids. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Job organization and knowledge is expected. Valid State Driver’s License.
