Gather the family for a morning of free entertainment, games and education SafeHouse of Shelby County will host a family fun day August 20th, 2016 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at Heardmont Park  We are excited to provide a fun afternoon for children and families in our community, said Nilam Parikh, owner of Comfort Inn Suites Pelham and one of the many sponsors Families are encouraged to come and enjoy the free food, activities, learn about the services SafeHouse has to offers and gain information from other programs Activities will include live music , dance performances , balloon crafts, putt-putt, basketball, face painting, carnival games, FREE FOOD and more

The Cahaba River Fry-Down is a celebration of the Cahaba River our regions primary drinking water source and a treasure trove of biological diversity The principal fundraiser for the Cahaba River Society, Fry-Down is a competitive cook-off surrounded by a party! The goals of this fun, unique event are to build more support for Cahaba conservation, bring education to people about water quality, wildlife habitat, and drinking water - FISH FRY COMPETITION We call it a fish fry-off, but teams are encouraged to prepare the catfish in any way they choose Guests have enjoyed fish cold-smoked, grilled, sauteed lots of creative and varied presentations Corporate and community team creations are evaluated by a panel of high-profile judges, led by George Sarris of the Fish Market on Southside and Yellow Bicycle Catering The Fry-Down is gaining a reputation as a culinary event, and a great addition to the Birmingham metro foodie movement It is unique in that there are no other area events including team catfish competition and crowd tasting Attendees are encouraged to sample all offerings and vote for Crowd Favorite Other awards include Most Creative, Best Presentation, Skinniest Fish, Ken Bowen Team Spirit Award, Best Side Dish, Miss Congeniality, and more - ACTIVITIES/OTHER FEATURES Beer Garden, featuring local craft breweries Live music Games for all ages educational and otherwise Much, much more

Beginning on Monday, July 11, 2016, all Mattress Firm stores in the Birmingham area will host a school supply drive, the third of Mattress Firm Foster Kids six annual donation drives to benefit local foster youth and families Through Sunday, September 4, 2016 during normal store hours, Mattress Firm will accept school supplies and monetary contributions to help give local foster children the confidence they need to succeed as a new school year begins All items collected will be donated to Kids to Love at the end of the eight-week drive

Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) founder Bryan Stevenson will present the 2016 J Roderick Davis Lecture at Samford University Oct 4 at 7:00 pm in Wright Center Concert Hall The universitys Howard College of Arts and Sciences and the Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership will host the free public event Bryan Stevenson has dedicated his law career to helping the poor, the incarcerated and the condemned EJI, based in Montgomery, Alabama, has challenged excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerated innocent death row prisoners, confronted abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aided children prosecuted as adults EJI also has initiated major anti-poverty and anti-discrimination efforts challenging the legacy of racial inequality in America Stevensons work has earned him numerous awards, including the ABA Wisdom Award for Public Service, the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Award Prize, the Olaf Palme International Prize, the ACLU National Medal Of Liberty, the National Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Award, the Gruber Prize for International Justice and the Ford Foundation Visionaries Award Prison and sentencing reform remains a perpetual concern in Alabama and the rest of the world Samford has many connections to that cause Howard College of Arts and Sciences is named for 18th century prison reformer John Howard As Alabama Attorney General earlier in the century, former Samford president Harwell Goodwin Davis (1938-1958) helped expose the states unjust convict lease system In March, the John Howard Scholars student organization launched the Howard Campaign for Fair Sentencing and Prison Reform Stevensons presentation will add to the ongoing efforts Former Howard College of Arts and Sciences dean Rod Davis, namesake of the lecture series, is a longtime admirer Bryan Stevenson's sacrificial dedication to righting the wrongs of so many capital sentences that have been unjustly handed out in recent decades has made him a genuine hero of our time, Davis said It is a great honor for us to have him give this year's lecture
